Singer-songwriter Sharmila is speaking out to raise awareness about her experiences in the Netherlands as a woman of color, a refugee, and a single mother to her daughter, Tanisha.

Sharmila, known for her pop and R&B; music, also holds degrees in social work and has dedicated more than 20 years of her career to supporting vulnerable communities. She has worked in children’s homes, women’s shelters, and organizations assisting refugees.

According to Sharmila, while she was actively involved in supporting refugees, she and her daughter later became refugees themselves in the Netherlands.

Sharmila alleges that she experienced discrimination, censorship, and mistreatment within organizations in the social work sector. She further claims she was wrongfully confined for nearly ten years.

She also states that her daughter, Tanisha, was institutionalized and experienced abuse in 2013. Tanisha later passed away in 2021.

Through her music and advocacy, Sharmila seeks to bring attention to issues affecting refugees, women of color, single parents, and individuals who believe they have experienced institutional discrimination and abuse.

“Iam an artist, a mother, and a survivor. By sharing my story, I hope to create awareness and encourage dialogue about justice, dignity, and human rights,” she said.

Sharmila continues to use her voice and creative work to advocate for awareness, accountability, and support for vulnerable individuals.

If people believe she deserves a municipal award from the Gemeente Amsterdam for her international musical achievements and humanitarian work, they are welcome to send a letter of recommendation to the Municipality of Amsterdam.
